Story of old trunk -part 6

My only blog I swear having these many questions! Go ahead… No no no…its not a drama class. Its me! What am I trying to do? I have decided to pack all those pretty sarees I showed you lately and bring them with me back to my home. And why am I taking the TRUNK with me? Because it will remind me of those hidden beautiful memories I have recently met.

Story of old trunk- part 5

Now, this is a Retro Rewind for me. I discovered these. Some colorful threads adding a playful touch to the frozen cloth. There was this vintage maroon Saree with vibrant detailed embroidery. Grandma did it when she was my age. It is strange to know she did this artistic work at the age of 22 unlike me who is more busy with her laptop and mobile phone.

Story of old trunk- part 4

I don’t answer my phone. There are few people with whom I go for a spontaneous phone conversations. I consider myself rude – and frankly, rather shy – for not picking up the phone when they call. This time, when I was trying my granny’s old (very old and quite pretty) lehenga-choli, I received a call. The call was rather from a special person..special to me. Though I didn’t want to receive, I had to. You must be thinking why I didn’t ignore it! Because the call was on granny’s landline and yes Einstein..we can’t put it on silent mode!

As you can probably tell, I am pretty obsessed with old stuffs around here. A single trunk, and the mementos inside, have the power to tell an unbelievable story–the story of a life lived, true love, or a memorable event. Seeing her collection, I thought about my memories. People who ‘were’ close to me. And then about people who ‘are’ close to me. It is without a doubt that the memories created over these past year will never be forgotten.

Story of old trunk -part 2

When I found this saree in old trunk, I immediately rushed to my granny asking its story. She told me about the time she met her in-laws for the first time. They, along with grandpa, had come to see her and finalize their marriage (an Indian Custom). She told me how she felt when they were sitting in front of her asking questions, checking her intellect and her looks. I again went back to the room and closed the door. I tried her saree. Wearing it over my Jeans, I tried to enact her. The shyness. The obvious smile of the moment. I found grandpa’s picture which was shown to granny before wedding. In this picture he looks so THIN!

Story of the old trunk -part 1

When I first saw the trunk in bedroom upstairs at my grandma’s home, I could totally feel my hands so wanting to open it to find what was inside. Curious about its history, I questioned my Grandma and she told me it was a gift by her mother. That old trunk has stayed with our family for over 70 years with many things hidden in it. Old trunks always have many old treasures. When I opened this one I found treasures of belongings, memories, prayers …
